Objectives

The TIDAL-EC project’s overarching objective is to improve the reliability, increase efficiency and reduce the levelised cost of energy (LCOE) of the three tidal energy converter (TEC) devices.  The project will balance cost, efficiency and reliability to determine the best option for increasing the economic viability of the entire system.

To achieve the overarching project objective, the following key scientific objective will be met:

  • Create an understanding of how TEC power take off (PTO) reliability and efficiency impacts LCOE of tidal power
  • Create an understanding of the interaction of seas with significant wave heights and a tidal turbine

Accomplishment of the above scientific objective will provide us with the new knowledge necessary to accomplish the following technological objectives:

  • To remove single point failures
  • To achieve an understanding of the life cycle performance and thermal profile of a TEC PTO
  • To achieve an understanding of the optimum method of PTO integration to improve reliability, increase efficiency and reduce the LCOE for the Tocardo, Oceanflow and Minesto devices
